Cloud Computing, or IT in the Clouds
One of the newest and most important trends currently shaping the IT industry is undoubtedly Cloud Computing, also known as the Cloud.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an ecosystem in which objects/devices connect to the internet for remote control. During IoT processes, data necessary for managing these objects is collected, processed, and transmitted. Selected application areas of IoT include Smart Environments, Smart Homes, Smart Industry, Smart Transportation, and Smart Cities.
For several years, IoT has been at the center of Cisco’s initiatives through the development of research, solutions, and business strategies. The company expects that by 2020, over 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet, resulting in increased network complexity, larger data volumes, and potential security vulnerabilities. In light of the transformations that the Internet of Things will bring over the next few years, Laércio Albuquerque, President of Cisco Brazil, announced the company’s global strategies focusing on both edge computing near connected devices and enhanced network security.
This goal is supported by Cisco Kinetic — an analytics platform designed to secure these devices and the entire network through artificial intelligence (AI).
Cisco Kinetic will be responsible for collecting information from various IoT devices. This data will then be transmitted through Cisco’s secure network, which enables the detection of anomalies or malware by analyzing the information processed by AI. “Imagine a self-driving car that needs to stop in an emergency situation,” says Marcelo Silva, Sales Director at Cisco Brazil. Such a decision must be made quickly and without delay, so it is essential to embed analytical capabilities directly into the vehicle.
Thanks to Cisco’s concept, data remains at its source without the need to transfer it to distant applications, allowing users to control privacy, security, and data ownership. The platform plays a central role in enforcing policies set by data owners by delivering selected data to private clouds, public clouds, or other endpoints chosen by the user. Cisco’s security technologies are integrated within a comprehensive IoT platform. The company renamed the solution from Smart + Connected Digital Platform to Kinetic, offering a toolkit and guidelines for building smart city infrastructures.
According to Cisco, Kinetic is a cloud-based platform that helps customers extract, compute, and move data from connected devices to IoT applications to deliver better outcomes and services. This platform represents an important milestone for Cisco and customers who want to unlock the value of data generated by machines, things, and connected spaces.
